The Golden Era
Savitri — The Great Actress (Mahanati)
Born: December 6, 1936, Chirala, Andhra Pradesh · Died: December 26, 1981
Considered the greatest actress in the history of Telugu cinema, Savitri was born Savitri Ganesan in 1936. An orphan raised by relatives, she overcame immense hardship to become a supremely versatile performer who could switch between classical dance, drama, and comedy within a single film. Her screen presence was described as otherworldly — she could convey more emotion through a single glance than most actors managed with pages of dialogue.
Savitri married Tamil actor Gemini Ganesan in 1952 in a ceremony that was not legally recognized at the time, as he was already married. Their tumultuous love story became legendary. She had two children, Vijaya Chamundeswari and Satish. In her later years, she faced financial ruin and health issues, dying from a brain hemorrhage at age 45. Her life was immortalized in the 2018 biopic Mahanati, directed by Nag Ashwin.
